A simple guide to CBD balms, creams and body care

Not all CBD is taken by mouth. A growing range of balms, creams, roll ons, bath products and skincare includes CBD as an ingredient, and they are used quite differently from oils and gummies.
Topical means on the skin
Topical CBD products are applied to the skin rather than swallowed. Because of that, they are sold as cosmetics, not food, and the daily amount guidance for edibles does not apply in the same way. Simply follow the directions on the pack.
Balms, creams and roll ons
Balms are thick and usually made with waxes and plant oils, so they stay put and are good for massaging in. Creams and lotions are lighter and absorb more quickly. Roll ons are handy for carrying in a bag or a gym kit. Each product lists its total CBD and pack size, so you can compare value across formats.
Bath bombs and soaks
CBD bath bombs and bath soaks add a little ritual to the end of the day. Drop one into a warm bath, let it fizz and relax. They are a popular gift too.
Skincare
CBD also appears in face serums, moisturisers and lip balms. As with any new skincare, patch test on a small area first and stop using it if you notice any irritation.
What to look for
CBD cosmetics sold in the UK must have a safety assessment and be notified before going on sale. Look for the total CBD content on the pack, the ingredients list, and a lab report for the batch. Cosmetics cannot make medical claims, so be wary of any product that promises to treat or cure a condition.
